Back in March 2019, we celebrated a global seafood journey, at the Shorehaven Seafood Festival!
On Sunday 31st March at Waterfront Park, Haveners and locals alike discovered their favourite seafood dishes from around the globe, from a variety of delicious food vendors. Family and friends came down for the festivities from 12pm til late!
There were Sunday beach vibes as chilled beats from the house DJ filled the air, and people relaxed with their feet in the sand and a mouthwatering cocktail, craft beer or wine in hand from one of the lounge bars. Check out the fun we had in the video.

The first home owner grant (FHOG) is a one-off payment from the State Government to encourage and assist first home buyers to buy or build their own home. The grant is $10,000, which is a huge help towards a deposit.
If you are a first home owner, you may qualify for the grant if you are purchasing or building a new home. Yes, that includes buying your very own House & Land package or block at Shorehaven!
Another State Govenrment initiative, these low-deposit home loans exclusive to WA are a fantastic way for First Home Buyers to get into their first home and onto the property ladder.
The way it works is by having no LMI (Lender’s Mortgage Insurance), resulting in lower entry costs. So far the lending platform has helped over 100,000 West Australians into their first homes!

Main Roads WA have announced an exciting extension to the Mitchell Freeway. Construction has already started on the extension, which will bring the Freeway up to Romeo Road (indicated below), and will be constructed in conjunction with the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension.
“It will alleviate pressure on the local road network, reduce travel times and improve safety and connectivity for people living and working in the region now and into the future”
Main Roads, WA
Here at Shorehaven, we’re in a unique position that benefits you. We are one of the closest communities situated north of Romeo Road (just a 3 minute drive), meaning we have a direct route to the future freeway intersection and beyond to Joondalup, Perth CBD and more.

Main Roads Project Map
The below map indicates the Mitchell Freeway Extension in context with the City of Wanneroo and other initiatives.

Here at Shorehaven, we’re excited to be benefiting from the Yanchep Rail Extension, delivered as a part of METRONET. The extension will put us within 2-3 minutes reach of either future Eglinton or Alkimos train stations, and within 41 minutes* of Perth CBD.
Our premium location allows us to be one of the most directly connected communities to these new stations. Whilst more populated areas near the existing Butler Station would need to backtrack for a southern commute, Shorehaven residents can enjoy a direct route in less time with less traffic.

While the shipwreck of the Alkimos now sits peacefully off the coast of Shorehaven, the former World War II liberty ship has a very colourful past.
Built in 1943, the Alkimos started life as the US cargo ship George M. Shriver. After 18 months of war service, she was sold to a Norwegian company and renamed Viggo Hansteen – which shares the name of a walking trail in Shorehaven – the Viggo Trail.
At the end of the war, the ship changed hands and was rechristened Alkimos, which means ‘strong’ or ‘young man’ in Greek. For a number of years the SS Alkimos cargo ship successfully plied her trade, but on March 20th 1963 she struck a reef near Beagle Island, 240 kilometres north of Fremantle, while on a voyage from Jakarta to Bunbury. This mishap set off a tragic chain of events. Five days after running aground at Beagle Island, the Alkimos was freed and towed into Fremantle for repairs, only to be impounded for non-payment of debts.
After this matter was resolved, the Alkimos was being towed to Hong Kong when the tow line snapped and high seas and gale force winds washed her ashore near Wreck Point, 56 kilometres north of Perth.

For the months that the ship remained stranded, a caretaker was put on board and it was around this time that stories of ghostly events started making headlines.
It was reported that a ghost in oilskins patrolled the decks at night, protecting the Alkimos from further salvage attempts. Stories of earlier ghosts have also been traced back to her time as a US cargo ship.
In January 1964, two attempts were made to refloat the Alkimos but both times the tow line snapped and she ran aground. Finally a tug succeeded in shifting the 7,291 tonne ship, but the tug and its crew were arrested and escorted back to Fremantle, leaving the Alkimos anchored in deep water. After eleven weeks of being battered by the sea, the Alkimos’ anchor chain broke and she came to rest in her current position.
But this is not the end of her story; workers who were dismantling the Alkimos hull for scrap had to swim for their lives after a fire broke out onboard. Even today the wreck of the Alkimos wants to be left alone, as parts of her structure are so unsafe that divers are advised not to enter the wreck.
The wreck of the Alkimos is still visible from the beach named after it, and its colourful past will always be part of Western Australia’s – and Shorehaven’s – maritime history.
